“It is unacceptable that 600 apparently fit and healthy young people (aged 35 and under) die suddenly each year from previously undiagnosed heart conditions, when there is evidence to show that screening can save lives.”
At the Danny Mills Heart Foundation, we fully support that EVERY young adult should be screened for any underlying heart defects before it is too late. Currently the Government’s policy states that “screening should not be offered” and we fully intend to challenge this to the best of our ability. In the UK, up to 12 young people are needlessly dying every week – it is time to do something about this.
Another UK charity – Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) – currently does a brilliant job in offering heart screening programmes around the UK. Despite this, the amount of young people they can screen is vastly limited and it is now up to the public to make the Government accept that every young adult should, at the very least, be subject to a basic ECG.
